Destinations: A Photo Overview

Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur is one of the three ancient cities of Kathmandu Valley.

The medieval town of Bhaktapur, just a few miles east of Kathmandu, was founded in the ninth century. There is no heavy industry, few modern buildings and no traffic here.

More than half of the residents are farmers and the rest are artisans--painting thankas, casting bronze, dying yarn, and spinning clay pots on doorsteps and in the squares.

Mothers bathe their young children in an outdoor community watering spot, where laundry is also done and dishes washed.

The sun casts a pleasant glow on corn and chiles drying on the red brick streets

Life is much slower and softer here.
