Kullu Valley

Kullu Valley is the west side of the state of Himachal Pradesh in the Indian Himalaya and has been the most popular destination of the Indian
Himalayas since the '60s. Areas of interest include: Kullu, Manali, Naggar and Rohtang Pass. Left: shepherd leaving Manali town for pastures above.
Below: small villages dot the landscape above the town of Manali.

Kullu is a small town and not as touristy as Manali; its also not as beautiful. It is an interesting place to observe local life. There are great
bargains on handwoven Kullu shawls and scarves and a good selection of restaurants offering great food and environment. Pictured above is a woman
consulting a palm reader on the side of the road.
Below: ancient temples of Nagar: front & side view of Siva Temple of Gauri Shankar

Rohtang Pass (3978 meters/13,057 feet) is the access into Lahaul and is only open from June-September. From Manali it is approx a 2 hour drive
up a winding pitted dirt road. The view is absolutely breath-taking and memorable!. One can take a guided horse ride up the snow-capped peaks
or just walk around the summit. There are vendors serving hot tea and snacks under tarps. There's also a couple of restaurants just below the
summit with full menus, really wonderful traditional foods and indoor/outdoor seating. That's me on the left.
