Varanasi

A boat ride on the River Ganges at dawn to witness the holy rituals is a highlight of a visit to this most important Hindu pilgrimage. There are over 100 bathing ghats in all. Shown in photo on left is one of the main ghats, Assi. There are also 2 burning ghats where bodies are cremated.

Several interesting temples in Varanassi are worth a peek (most do not allow non-hindus to enter): the Golden Temple which one can view from an upstairs apartment across the street, Durga Temple, Tulsi Manas Temple are a few noteworthy ones. Photos are prohibited, even of the exteriors.
